Form SSA-1099. I received a lump sum in 2021 after retiring. In trying to enter that payment year of 2021, the box won't allow anything after 2020?

If you received a lump-sum payment in 2021 for 2021, then all you need to do is enter the information reported on your Form SSA-1099.

The lump-sum entries that TurboTax asks about pertain to payments made in the current year (2021) that were made for a prior year (2020 or earlier).  Those require some special handling to determine whether they are taxable.

Follow these instructions to enter the payments from prior years for Social security:

  • Enter the information into Form SSA-1099
  • Answer Yes to Did you receive any lump-sum payments?
  • What year was the lump-sum payment for? Enter the year 2020
  • Enter the amount of the lump-sum payment for 2020 on the next screen, and Continue,
  • Now, let's look at your 2020 form, enter 0 for the Amount in box 5 of your 2020 Form SSA-1099, and Continue
  • Answer the following questions about your 2020 income using your 2020 tax return, Continue
  • Here's your lump-sum payment info
  • Click on the box,  Add another lump-sum payment
  • Enter year and complete the questions in the same way that was done for 2020
  • Do this for each year that the lump-sum payment was received

Each year needs to be entered separately with information from that year's tax return.
