Ok, MRD, for someone born Sept 1949, when do I have to take the MRD... what I read is in 2021 before April. Please advise. To do with turning 72 after new rule?

Ok, MRD, for someone born Sept 1949, when do I have to take the MRD... what I read is in 2021 before April. Please advise. To do with turning 72 after new rule?

The Secure Act made major changes to the RMD rules. If you reached the age of 70½ in 2019 the prior rule applies, and you must take your first RMD by April 1, 2020. If you reach age 70 ½ in 2020 or later you must take your first RMD by April 1 of the year after you reach 72.

So if born in Sept 1949, you would turn 71 in 2020 and  not 71 1/2  (and 72) until 2021.      Therefore the year after turning 72 will be Apr 1, 2022 for the first RMD.
