I received a 2016 1099-R with box 2a (Taxable Income) = 0.00 and box 7 (distribution code) = PJ. Do I need to file ammended tax return?
I understand the codes mean distribution from ROTH IRA due to excess contribution.

No, you do not have to amend your 2015 return (the year of the excess contribution). The 1099-R makes no difference.
