2 common reasons for this
- when entering the Trad IRA non-deductible contribution answer NO to anything to do with recharacterizing or moving the money to Roth, answer this section with respect to the Trad IRA contribution only. The Roth conversion (not to be confused with a recharacterization) is handled when you enter the 1099-R. If you input anything to do with Roth recharacterization here it will be reported as though you made a direct contribution to a Roth not a Trad IRA which would likely violate the MAGI contribution limit.
- you need to have compensation (earned income from W2 etc) at least as much as the contribution otherwise it will not be a valid contribution. See Pub 590A
