My pension is admin by Northern Trust Co/Kansas City Firefighers. When I called to clarify if they were public or private, they hesitantly said private. Is that ok?

It's almost surely a public pension.  You might check with them again.

Public pensions are retirement plans for people who’ve worked for federal, state or local governments.

Other retirement income would typically be considered private.
