My husband receives social security disability payments. Why can't we take the elderly and disabled tax credit?
It's practically impossible to qualify for the Credit for the Elderly or Disabled. The income limits were established over 30 years ago (in 1983) and have never been adjusted for inflation. Furthermore, the full amount of your husband's Social Security disability payments is counted against the income limit. If he received $5,000 or more for the year, his income exceeds the limit and he is not eligible for the credit. Hardly anyone ever qualifies for this credit. In most cases Social Security income alone (including Social Security disability income) is enough to put the person over the income limit.
