Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

My husband passed away this year. Will turbotax be able to pull our 2021 taxes based on my social security number?

He filed under his social and I can't get Turbotax to understand my situation. So I set up an account in my name. Will our past returns come up under my social?

No.  You have to log in to his account.  You can still file a Joint return for 2022.  I assume 2021 is under his account and ssn?  I guess you don't know his account id and password?  If you set up a new account you have to enter everything as new and can't transfer from 2021.

To find his account.  First LOG OUT of whatever TurboTax account you're logged into right now. Then use this TurboTax account recovery website to get a list of user ID's for an email address. Run the tool against any email addresses you may have used

If he used the Desktop CD/Download program then the only copy is on your computer and not saved or stored online.

So sorry for your loss.  Did you file joint returns with your spouse in past years?  If so you should be using that same account to file a joint return for 2022.  Do you need help with getting the account and user ID?  You might be able to get some help from customer support---but it will take patience.

No--your past returns will not transfer over to a new account that you set up in only your name.

For the year that your spouse died, you can still file a joint return.  That way, you will get the married filing jointly standard deduction of $25,900 (+ $1400 for each spouse 65 or older) which will lower the amount of income you are taxed on.

In My Info, you will need to indicate that your spouse died. When his name is in My Info,  there is a screen early in the interview that asks "Do any of these apply to [name] ?’” where you will do that, and then a drop down will appear where you can enter the date he passed.

If you have qualified dependent children you will be able to file as a qualified widow(er) for the next two years after this tax return.  Post back if you need further help.

Contact customer support to see what they will need to do to help you access the account if your spouse did not leave any records of the account and user ID that you are going to need.
