Multiple RMDs after turning 72... do I report only the 2022 RMDs that I have taken?

I turned 72 in December 2022 and have 3 RMDs, I have taken 2 in December 2022 but took the 3rd in February 2023.

1) How do I answer, "I have received ALL my RMDs in 2022"  Yes or Partial? I only have 2 1099Rs

2) Which RMDs do I need to include on the question "RMD amount:" and "RMD Received:"

No substitute Form 1099-R is to be filed.  The distribution in 2023 of your 2022 RMD simply goes on your 2023 tax return.

As long as you do not indicate that you did not take all of your RMD, TurboTax won't file Form 5329 Part IX incorrectly indicating that you had an excess accumulation.

You will answer "Yes" to "Did I receive all my 2022 RMDs".

Please see What is the required minimum distribution once I reach age 72? for additional information.

Multiple RMDs after turning 72... do I report only the 2022 RMDs that I have taken?

You will answer YES you did receive all of your RMD's.

  • You will post the two that you have in hand exactly as they are.
  • You will also post the third in the same section as if you've already received the 1099-R.
    • You will enter it as a substitute 1099-R
    • You won't get the actual form until 2024.
    • You don't have to post the form but keep it with your 2022 tax return.
    • This process will prevent you from having to amend your 2022 tax return.

Follow these steps:

  1. Select Federal
  2. Wages & Income
  3. Select Wages and Salaries, or Revisit
  4. Scroll to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  5. Select the type of income.
    1. IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)
    2. Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099)
    3. Canadian Registered Pension Income
  6. At this point you can edit an existing document of [Add another 1099-R]
  7. If a new 1099-R continue to Let's import your tax info
  8. [Change how I enter my form]
  9. [Type it Myself]
  10. Post your information.
  11. Box 7 will probably be code 8  "Excess contributions plus earnings/excess deferrals (and/or earnings) taxable in 2022".
  12. Several screens after you've posted your information,
  13. Do any of these situations apply to you?
  14. Select I need to file a substitute 1099-R
  15. Continue to the end of the interview.

Multiple RMDs after turning 72... do I report only the 2022 RMDs that I have taken?

Good answer thanks! but can you comment on my other questions....since I only have 2 1099Rs

Example:  RMD#1  $1000 taken in 2022

                   RMD#2  $5000 taken in 2022

                   RMD#3  $10000 taken in February 2023

Question:  "Did I receive all my 2022 RMDs"  Yes or No?  (I am thinking yes)

if No do I enter the total of my RMD #1 and RMD #2? ($6000)  Or all 3 RMD 2022 amounts? ($16000)

I pushed the RMD#3 to 2023 since I retired in Nov 2022 and only have SS income in 2023.
