Although your 401(k) plan approved the hardship withdrawal, the withdrawal is still subject to tax. It could also be subject to penalties, if you don't qualify for an exception. The scenario you described sounds like it would qualify for the financial emergency exception, which is limited to $1,000 per year.

Also, a 401(k) is not an IRA, so if the distribution was from a 401(k), only the exceptions that are available for distributions from a qualified retirement plan would apply, not those that only apply to IRAs.
