If we detect that your tax situation requires expanded coverage, like deductions for owning a home, unemployment income, or self-employment income, we'll prompt you to upgrade to a version that supports the forms you need so we can maximize your tax deductions and ensure you file an accurate return.

If you had more than one employer during the taxable year and your total wages and compensation were over the wage base limit for the year, the total Social Security tax or Social Security equivalent Tier 1 RRTA tax withheld may have exceeded the maximum amount due for the tax year.

You can check to see if you have excess Social Security tax that would be on that form by looking at your W-2s.  The amount of Social Security tax you pay for 2023 is on the first $160,200 of wages.  The amount of Social Security tax for that amount is $9,932.40.

Once you look at this information, if there is excess Social Security tax, then you may need to upgrade to have it reflect correctly on your tax return.

This tax is figured on each individual.  If you are Married Filing Jointly and neither of you earned more than $160,200, check to make sure that the W-2s show accurately who they belong to.
