If my wife and I file separately do we need 2 separate turbotax programs? she is self employed and I am retired.

When you use Desktop TurboTax, which you install from a CD or download to your own hard drive, you can prepare and e-file multiple returns for the cost of the software. You can e-file up to 5 Federal returns—more if you mail the additional ones.

You can also use TurboTax Online or the mobile app to prepare multiple returns, but each return requires its own unique login and must be paid for separately (if the return doesn't qualify for Free Edition). 

Most customers who need to file separate returns for family members find that the CD/Download version is more economical.

Just be aware that it is very rarely to your advantage to file Married Separately, especially if you live in a Community Property State.
