If my mother's income covered about 85% of her medical expenses before she passed away in 2016, and I paid the other 15% myself, can I deduct that 15% that I paid myself?

My mother's medical expenses for 2016 were about $85,000.  Her income covered about $73,000.  I paid the last $12,000.  Can I deduct that $12,000 from my taxes?  Or am I ineligible because I paid less than 50% of her medical expenses?

You can deduct your mother's medical expenses you paid, if you provided over one half of her total financial support in 2016.

To enter your medical /insurance expenses -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Deductions and Credits
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Medical
  • On Medical Expenses, click the start or update button
