Your child's SS benefits are never reported on your tax return.  If that is your child's only income, he/she does not have to file either.

If your child has other income, for 2016, she must file her own tax return if

  • her unearned income was more than $1,050
  • her earned income was more than $6300
  • her gross income was more than the larger of: $1050 or earned income of $5950 plus $350.
