If Social Security is the only income you two have, you do not even need to file a tax return.  Or do you mean SS is YOUR only income, and your spouse has other income?

The thing is, filing separate returns means you both have to file the same way.  So if your spouse is itemizing and using the mortgage, etc. YOU also have to itemize even if it is a big disadvantage to you.  (By the way, the homeowners and car insurance are not deductible).

Why do you want to file separate returns?  You are posting from TurboTax Live Deluxe which means you are paying for help from a CPA.  You should be discussing this with the CPA.

You can arrange for Live help with your questions from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Pacific time.
