If I made contributions to my retirement plan (401(k)) and didn't take money out of it in any previous years, why is Turbo Tax telling me I'm not eligible for the credit?

First, check these basic eligibility requirements are that you must be -
  1. Age 18 or older;
  2. Not a full-time student; and
  3. Not claimed as a dependent on another person’s return
Next, your income may exceed the requirements for the credit.  The amount of the credit is based on filing status and your adjusted gross income.  You can find more information about the specific levels at this link.

If none of this explains it, go back to the Credit under Deduction and Credits and reanswer the questions - making sure you didn't accidentally say YES to the full-time student question if you are not a full-time student.
