If entire 1099-R distribution is designated as QCD, why is zero not allowed on line 2b?

Turbotax 2025 has no option to show distribution as a QCD.

Box 2b of this Form 1099-R is required to have box 2b equal to box 1.  It becomes a QCD based on how you report this on your tax return.

After entering the Form 1099-R as received, making sure to mark the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box on TurboTax's 1099-R form to match what is on the form provided by the payer, as long as you were age 70½ or over during the tax year, on the page that asks, "Do any of these situations apply to you?," TurboTax will provide a box to mark to indicate that you transferred all or part of the distribution to charity.  Once that box is marked, TurboTax will ask how much was transferred to charity and will exclude this amount from the taxable amount shown on Form 1040 line 4b.  TurboTax will also mark the QCD box next to this line on Form 1040.

Follow these steps to fix your issue:

  1. Open your return to the 1099-R QCD.
  2. Go through the 1099-R entries
  3. Look at Box 7 on your form, is there a Y in the box and is it in the program (this is new for TY25 and not mandatory- but a quick way to prove)
  4. Either way, we continue on. It's just nice to know if the program already knows with the code Y.
  5. Is the IRA/ SEP/ SIMPLE box checked? It should be - both on your form and in the program
  6. continue on and look for the qualified charity distribution.  "Do any of these uncommon situations apply?" or "Did you transfer this to charity?"
  7. Select Yes, - since in fact you did.
  8. A box should pop up asking the amount of QCD, enter the amount.
    • If you don't see this, you have to do a little workaround and I think this applies to you. We are going to cheat and then fix it:
      1. back up to the 1099-R, box 7 and select I have another box, add the Y.
      2. go forward a couple screens and the program asks how much was QCD and gets your return corrected.
      3. Go until the end and done with the 1099-R.
      4. The program is now aware of and holding the QCD information.
      5. Go back and remove the Y.
      6. Continue forward and the QCD question will pop up again with the amount entered.
  9. You can look at your 1040. Line 4a is the total and line 4b is the taxable part.
