I used retirement funds to pay my son's college tuition. Where do I claim this?

If you take an early distributions from an IRA (traditional or Roth) before reaching age 59 1/2, you may get an exception to the 10% penalty if the money is used form Qualified higher education expenses.

 

Enter your 1099-R. Click here for instructions.

  1. After you enter your 1099-R, continue with the onscreen interview until you get to the Did your use your IRA to pay for any of these expenses? screen.
  2. Scroll down to Higher education and enter the amount. 
  3. Continue with the onscreen interview until complete.
