I received a 1099-G form and I don't know why or what it's for, so I'm not sure how to enter it on my taxes.

Did you get a state refund from your 2023 tax return?

What box is the amount in? It could be for a state refund you got last year or for unemployment. You enter them in different places. If it is for a state refund in box 2 then the year is in box 3. Like you got a 2023 state refund in year 2024. 2023 (or prior) is the year it is for. The 2024 in the top right box is the year you received it.

1099G Box 1 is for Unemployment
1099G Box 2 is for a prior year state refund
They get entered in different places.

Yes, there is an amount of $40 in Box2. Taxable year 2023 in Box3.

1099G box 2 is for a state refund you got last year. A State Tax Refund is taxable if you itemized deductions on that prior year's federal return and took a deduction for state income taxes instead of the sales tax. You got a deduction benefit for it so now you have to include it as income. If you took the Standard Deduction it is not taxable and you don't need to report it. Check your 1040 line 12 to see which deduction you took.

To enter a state refund just type 1099-G or 1099-g (with the dash) in the search box at the top of your return and click on Jump To it.

OR Enter the 1099G under
Federal on the left side
Wages & Income at the top

Scroll down to Other Common Income
You might need click on Show More to expand the section

Then it's the first line for Refunds Received for State/Local Tax Returns - Click Start or Revisit
You do not want the next line that says Other 1099G Income

On the first screen check YES - Received a State Refund.
