I owed over $1000 to fed taxes, recommendation was I prepay quarterly. pension and IRA distribution have withholding, but not SSA. Can I add SSA withholding instead?

Yes, you may have taxes withheld from your Social Security payments or increase your withholdings from another source instead of paying quarterly taxes.

As long as the taxes are paid throughout the year, the source of the payments (withholdings or estimated taxes) does not matter.
