I need to Amend 2025 Taxes because I forgot to include 1099R

I start the Amendment. I face 2 issues:

1. I rolled over my 401K account (all of the money) into a IRA.  For some reason, Turbo Tax thinks this is an inheritance from a dead me. And it keeps asking when did I die. It just keeps flagging error asking for the date when I passed away

2. It keeps saying I cannot leave any entry in the 1040 form empty. It behaves as if it is new filing.

Is it possible to amend a return using Turbo Tax 2025 software?

Yes, it is possible to amend your tax return for 2025. Please use the instructions in this link to be sure TurboTax knows the original numbers and the corrected ones. It's likely it's the same and if this was a trustee-to-trustee transfer there should be nothing to report. Double check your 'Personal Info' for date of birth and that there's no selection for deceased'.

Do not change your tax return until you read all the instructions. TurboTax needs to know the original numbers and the corrected numbers to provide the correct end results before you prepare it.

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines.

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
  • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
  • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected.
  • You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment

Amend a tax return for the current tax year

Carefully review any questions in the 1099-R entry.

In TurboTax Online, or TurboTax Desktop, you enter your 1099-R by going to:

  • Federal > Wages & Income, then selecting IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) under Retirement Plans and Social Security.
  • Be sure you correctly answer the question on the page titled, 'Tell us if you moved the money through a rollover or conversion' > Select 'I rolled over some or all of it to an IRA or other retirement account within the limits...'

Thank you @DianeW777  for your response. I saw the link you provided and watched the video. I am doing exactly the same steps as highlighted in the video. When I clink on the link - I want to Amend a return and go through followup questions and answer them - Yes I have filed and so on, I am presented the screen to change which topic needs to be amended. At this, point if I clicked on the tab You & your Family - there is no information there, so I enter my information, spouse information and child information - and then it say "Lets get biggest refund possible" and I click continue - it asks to enter W2 - and so on - it is now treating it as a new return.

If I continued to add 1099-R and very carefully review the question and answer correctly, making sure no where I say it is inherited, or mention that I am dead - because I am not - even then the software takes me to the step to put a date of my death.

- --Sigh :(
