I converted the entire balance ($5500) of a newly opened traditional IRA to a Roth in order to make a backdoor contribution. Charles Schwaab retirement group tells me that I won't be receiving a 1099-R for this transaction, but everything that I see on Turbo Tax about how to enter this requires one. Do I need to have a 1099-R?

The Roth conversion is required to be reported on a Form 1099-R. If the Roth conversion occurred in 2019, it will be reported on a 2019 Form 1099-R that is reportable on your 2019 tax return. However, a nondeductible traditional contribution for 2018 must be entered into 2018 TurboTax and TurboTax will prepare 2018 Form 1099-R to report this, with the basis appearing on line 14 to be carried forward to line 2 of your 2019 Form 8606. The basis on line 2 of your 2019 Form 8606 to determine the taxable amount of your 2019 Roth conversion.
