You say that you are retired and that you earned $9000.   You do not mention if you had any other income in addition to the $9000.   Did you have any retirement income?  Social Security?   Pension?   Distributions from an IRA or 401k?    Investment income?

Who has to file?

If the $9,000 is your only source of income, then you probably do not need to file a Federal tax return (assuming you're Single, your Standard deduction is $15,750; $17,750 age 65+).

However, you may want to file a tax return anyway to:

  • Get back any Federal and/or State taxes that were deducted from your earnings.
  • If you were self-employed, you must still file as you owe self-employment Social Security and Medicare taxes (you earned more than $400).
  • Your State may require you to file a tax return depending on where you live.
  • You may be eligible for Earned Income Credit (and get a refund even if you owe $0 tax).
  • Filing a return is good to have for your financial records.  The IRS can examine a tax return within three years beginning from the date it was filed or its due date, whichever is later.  Thus, if you do not file, the "clock doesn't start ticking" until you do file.
