No. If you are overseas, you gain an automatic 2 month extension. However, if you e-file after the April 15 deadline, your return will be considered late. To get the automatic 2 month extension without filing an application for a regular extension, you must file your return before June 15 by mail and attach a written explanation. If you want a longer extension, you must apply for the regular extension electronically before April 15. To apply for an extension after April 15 and before June 15, you must file the extension application by mail and attach a written explanation.
You may be able to ask for a first-time waiver if you didn't understand the rules.
