You don't report the SSI (Supplemental Security Income) money you received. Only report the SSA-1099 and any other income (non SSI) you have. If you only have social security, you may not be required to file. And if you receive social security, you do not need to file a tax return for the stimulus payment.
I am trying to file a tax return for my handicapped brother so he can get the stimulus money. they said I had to file a 1040 for him and put 0 on line 30. Where do I put his only income which is SSI and food stamps.
He did not receive the stimulus and the IRS said we had to file a 1040 for him for them to send it to him. They also said to put $0 on line 30 and then they would send him the back stimulus money. Can I do this on turbotax?
You can if you add $1 of interest so that you can efile. But is your brother your (or anyone else's) tax dependent?
Yes, you may. Use TurboTax Free Edition.
If you have not received one or both of your stimulus checks, you will receive your payment in the form of a Recovery Rebate Credit on line 30 of your 2020 Federal tax return when you file.
TurboTax will compare your one or two stimulus payment amounts to the computations within TurboTax. The computations within TurboTax are based upon the information that you have entered into the tax software. If you are due an additional amount, it will be issued as a Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC) on line 30 of the 2020 1040 tax return.
In TurboTax Online, you are prompted to input stimulus check 1 and stimulus check 2 information under Review down the left hand side of the screen.
You can access your stimulus check choices by following these steps:
