There are options to get your new baby a Social Security Number.  You may be able to schedule an in-person appointment at your local SS office.

You can also mail in required documentation to Social Security.

The evidence required to process an SSN application for a newborn is the same evidence gathered by birthing facility employees and verified with the respective bureaus of vital statistics during the birth registration process.

ABSOLUTLY DO NOT  UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES  FILE A RETURN WITHOUT GETTING THAT NUMBER FIRST ...  if you do you will NOT be able to amend the return to capture the child related credits.
