The IRS instructions that I'm reading don't say to mail a doctor's letter when you file your return, if you claim the disability exemption. You just file and claim the exemption and if the IRS wants proof, they will send you a letter asking for more information. Do you see different instructions?
Yes, according to the IRS, you do need to "furnish proof that you can't do any substantial gainful activity because of your physical or mental condition". This is required every year.

How is that provided when e-filing? Or does it force a mailed return?
And, if a letter is required again, I would then suspect it must be "fresh" -- dated within the past 12 months. You may need to get an updated letter from your doctor as the old letter may be considered out of date.
