This is handled in the New York (NY) State portion of the tax return interview.

Thanks for the response---
I followed your instructions and got to Federal Income on the NY State return but it does not show "Wages and Retirement Adj.". Thus I cannot go further per your instructions.
What is going on here?
A few days ago I wrote about this in the help section of turbotax and the reply was that there was a software issue that was corrected (was it?). I would think that many NY retirees are having this same problem.

I want to amend my earlier reply---
I got thru your item 3 but item 4 (Gov't Pension Exclusion). What did show was "NY taxable..." where I filled in the amount. A few screens later I got to "Pension Deduction Summary" and low and behold my $20,000 showed up under NY non-disability pensions and IRA distr. That shows $69,860 and I have no idea where that comes from. May be correct but sure would like to have seen that amount listed somewhere else.
We may be on the right track now.
Bill
The taxable amount on your NYS return should be the total of your 1099-R distributions less the $20,000 exclusion.
Please keep in mind that if you are married, both spouses are eligible for the $20,000 for a maximum of $40,000. If your spouse had less than a $20,000 1099-R distribution, then the exclusion would equal the amount of the distribution.
