I am on social security so is my wife she has a retirement and she worked some in 2017 do we need to file fed. & state tax

You have to report all income received for both of you on a joint tax return.  Social Security benefits reported on a SSA-1099, retirement income reported on a Form 1099-R and wages reported on a W-2 are all reported on a tax return.
