I am being asked about our Roth IRA contributions, but I've read the custodian tells the IRS that information. Is this above what we contribute through work?

Yes. TurboTax is asking for the total of all contributions made for years before 2017 minus all distributions made before 2017. Many times, IRAs are rolled over to different custodians and this contribution (basis) information doesn't get transferred in the process.
