It is not necessary for that box to be checked. It is only used for those that have the Earned Income Credit on their tax return.
IRS instructions don't mentioned that is ONLY for EIC, it says for other credits as well:
"2025 Residency
If your main home, and your spouse’s if filing a joint return, was in the United States for more than half of 2025, check the box. Answering this question will help the IRS determine your eligibility for certain tax benefits, including the earned income credit."
@user17703616229 E-filed federal tax return on 01/28 with tax refund. Received tax refund on 02/04. The check box on the Form 1040 for having main home in the US was Not used
I noticed this same box after TTX completed the error checking routine and the IRS had accepted the return. On the plus side I did not spend any time trying to get TTX to check that residency box.
