Retirement contributions on your W-2 generally do *NOT* appear on your tax form unless you qualify for the "saver's credit". If they're pre-tax, as with most amounts reported in both Box 12 (401(k), 403(b), 457(b), etc.) and Box 14 (414(h)(2) mandatory pre-tax state & local retirement contributions), they have already been deducted from Box 1 and other appropriate boxes on your W-2. (Generally, if Box 5 is greater than Box 1 this is why.) If it's Box 14 but *not* pre-tax, then your contributions are "basis" in your retirement plan; you claim that as an prorated exclusion from your pension checks over your remaining expected life.
