How do I file, if I retired and did not work in 2016?

If you are single and your only income is from social security, you do not need to file. If you are married, you would still file with your spouse's income and include your social security.

If your received (or will receive) a 1099-R for a distribution from an IRA, 401k or annuity, you would include that income as well.
