How do I enter a lump sum payment from my SSA 1099 that covers multiple prior years?

As a result of the Social Security Fairness Act, my 2025 SSA-1099 net benefits for 2025 includes $1,049.00 paid in 2025 for "Other Tax Years". I can enter individual amounts listed by year for 2021-2024, but not a lump sum paid for multiple years.

Are you trying to use the lump sum election to allocate the Social Security for the prior years? Please clarify.

The SS 1099 lists each of the amounts paid in 2025 for years 2024 - 2021. I can enter these in Turbo Tax and provide and enter the additional AGI and taxable SS amounts requested for those tax years. The problem is there is another amount listed, $1,049.00, described as “Paid in 2025 for Other Tax Years”. TurboTax doesn’t seem to allow an entry unless it is for one specific year. How can I enter this amount covering multiple years? Enter the $1,049.00 as if it relates to 2020?

If your SSA-1099 provides no more description than 'Paid in 2025 for Other Tax Years', I would allocate the $1,049 over the values for years 2021 through 2024.

However, assigning the payment to 2020 is a valid option.

Make sure that you retain records for how the payment was reported.  Retain the records with your tax documents should a tax authority have a question at a later time.
