How do I delete a single contribution from my state itemized deduction in TurboTax?
Alabama has a state tax credit for contributions to Scholarships for Kids, a 501(c)3. Contributions are tax deductible at the federal level and tax credit at state level. When I enter the contribution as a federal itemized deduction, it automatically transfers to my state return. To take advantage of the credit, I need to delete the deduction from my STATE return.

How do I delete a single contribution from my state itemized deduction in TurboTax?
In the Alabama state interview, navigate to the screen entitled "Let's Check for any Alabama Deductions". Look down the screen to "Gifts".
When you click Start for Gifts, you will see a screen with 3 lines - Contributions by cash or check, Other than cash or check, and Carryover from prior year.
These three lines should be pre-filled with the subtotaled federal amounts. What you need to do is to take the federal amount (say, for cash) and subtract the amount of the deduction for your scholarship. Plug in this new amount into the box for cash - Alabama will use this number instead for calculating your itemized deductions.
Then continue through the Alabama return to enter the amount for your single contribution in order to get the Alabama credit.
