How do I account for WA PMFL income for personal medical leave? I did not receive a 1099 G form from the state.

I also did not receive a separate W-2 form for the amount. So I don't know if I claim it all or just a portion.

To enter your WA PMFL income when you did not receive either a Form 1099-G, or a W-2, you will need to go to a different section.

  1. Go to Income in the Federal section of your tax return
  2. Scroll down to Less Common Income, which is near the bottom
  3. Click the down arrow to the right to expand the options
  4. Select Start to the right of Miscalleneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C
  5. Next, scroll down to Other reportable income and click Start
  6. Click Yes, then +Add
  7. Here, you enter a description, such as WA PMFL and the amount, then Continue

Note: The portion of the benefit paid for by your post-tax premiums is tax-free. However, the portion paid for by your employer's premiums is taxable. Therefore, only report the amount that was paid by your employer.

And how do you figure out what part was paid for by the employer? The W2 does not provide that information and there is no 1099-G issued by the state.

Washington State does not always issue ‌Form1099-G for Paid Family and Medical Leave. But this income may be taxable. If you paid part of the cost for the plan by a payroll deduction, it would not be taxable and does not need to be reported.  If you did not pay any of the cost, it is likely taxable.  If you are not sure you can ask your employer or your state for this information.

Employer and employee contributions for WAPFL/WAPML are sometimes listed in Box 14 of your Form W-2.

You can report it as Other Income as follows:

  1. Click on Search at the top right of your TurboTax screen
  2. Type "Other Income" in the search window, and hit "Enter"
  3. Click on "Jump to Other Income"
  4. Your screen will say Did you get a Form 1099-MISC? Answer Yes and Continue
  5. Your screen will say Let's enter the income from your 1099-MISC
  6. Enter the amount under Other Income in Box 3 and Continue
  7. Your screen will say Describe the reason for this 1099-MISC. You can enter Washington State PML and Continue
  8. On the screen with "Do one of these uncommon situations apply?", Select" None of these apply" and Continue
  9. Answer "No" to "Did the XXX involve work that's like your main job?"
  10. Answer "I got it in 20225 when asked "How often did you get income for Washington State PML?"
  11. On the screen that says Did the XXX involve an intent to earn money? Answer No and Continue.
