I'm trying to take the Business Energy Investment Tax Credit and cannot get either the desktop or the online version of Business to open the form.
I am filing 2025 taxes for a 3 member LLC. We bought and put into service a solar system for our commercial rental property.
Can someone please help? I feel like I've been dupped into buying this software that cannot deliver it's promise.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You will need to manually complete Form 3468 in TurboTax Business (Desktop) using Forms Mode.
Form 3468 is not working to claim the 30% credit for systems <1 mw. I and many others have spent hours on the phone with support getting nowhere. But I heard from another user that they've finally acknowledged it and plan to fix it, but it may not be by 4/15.
So the only option is to use a different tax software system, unless you can wait and trust TT to fix it.
@PatriciaV The software does not work for claiming the 30% credit for systems <1 mw. If you correctly select 7a (< 1 mw) and 8d (prevailing wage N/A) it will revert to the 6%. Apparently, TT plans to fix this but it may not be until after 4/15/2026.
@PatriciaV I've since learned that the 30% problem is only in Part VI. Part V is calculating 30%, but is incorrectly requiring Form 7220.
This experience has been reported to our tech support team and is being researched. It's unlikely that this will be resolved before the filing deadline. We recommend that you request an extension of time to file or file without this credit and amend later when the software has been updated.
I'm unable to find the form 3468 equivalent in TurboTax premium online. Can you clarify whether the anticipated fixes will apply to the online version as well or not? Will I eventually be able to amend with the form in the online version? If I were to switch to the desktop business version with the stated issue, does it problem apply to form mode as well? Or will both platforms require a later amendment?
TT has lost a lot of trust. I've trusted them for over 20 years and now they let me down. Why wouldn't they have prioritized this and at least acknowledged it in the software? Very poor quality and even worse customer service.
Yes, when the form update is released, both the online and desktop version of TurboTax will be updated.
You should be able to 1) file for an extension or 2) file now and later amend your return in either version.
That's super helpful, thank you. What is the best mechanism for getting notified when the form update is released?
Check your 2025 IRS forms availability in these tables.
Thank you for the pointer to the list of forms available on each version of TurboTax, but this post is largely about missing or broken functionality in one of the forms (3468 solar investment credit) which your team mentioned was being addressed, but probably not before filing deadline.
I'm trying to figure out how I can track when that functionality gap has been fixed? Any thoughts here?
Thank you!
@douze_b I ended up switching to TurboTax Desktop so I could override the 6% to 30% (the incorrect Form 7220 filing requirement has been fixed in that version) and filed today, which was pretty seamless.
Unfortunately, I had already paid for Online, so that I could view/proofread the actual tax forms -- and of course, they don't want to refund it (even though their website states that they'll refund the fees if the product is unusable). I may have to have my credit card bank reverse it.
@andyoak - thank you very much for the tip. Switching to desktop worked for me as well. Appreciate the help!
