Box 10 Form 1099 is asking WHERE the dividends were earned? Where would I locate that information?

Here is some helpful information regarding your 1099 form..  Hope this helps..

If you have a Form 1099-DIV with an amount in box 10, these are exempt interest dividends.  This would be interest earned from bonds on municipalities or states, not US government bonds.  They are not taxed on the federal return, but could be considered for alternative minimum tax, if applicable.  TurboTax will calculate this.

The payer of the dividends would include information documents explaining which state they were derived from and if it is your resident state they would not be taxed on your state return.  If they are from another state, they would be taxed on your state return.

To check dividend entry you can use the steps here:

  1. Federal Taxes tab
  2. Wages & Income
  3. Dividends on 1099-DIV Edit
  4. Edit the one with the tax exempt interest dividends
  5. Check the box "my form has info in more than just these boxes"
  6. Enter the tax exempt interest dividends in box 10
  7. Continue and follow the prompts to complete the 1099-DIV entry
  8. TurboTax will ask any necessary questions about this income
