Getting error on Form 1099-R Box 14a Tax w/h can not be >=gross distribution? (The entries are correct (Gross Dist 12K is larger than box 14a $171)

<<IF this is NOT a Federal CSA-1099-R from the OPM>>

What they are saying is box 14 cannot have a value if box 16 is empty.  NY is particularly picky about this, but other states may be also.

Go back to that 1099-R and edit it.

and....IF you only have one line for boxes 14-15-16...

...when you get to the page with box 14 on it, copy the value box 2a into box 16 as long as  2a has a non-zero value in it.  If box 2a is empty <edited>, then box 16 must be the Federally-taxable amount of box 1....which is usually box 1, but not always.

Yeah, most 1099-R forms are issued with box 16 empty, but the software needs that value in there for a variety of reasons.

Be sure you haven't mistyped commas or decimal points.  For example, you might have typed 12.000 as the Gross Distribution.

Thx, SweetieJean, for responding!  Numbers were accurate, none mistyped.  It was another issue.
