Entering the portion of military retirement pay, given to an ex spouse

To report the portion of your military retirement given to your ex spouse, report the entire 1099-R as if you received the whole thing. Then enter a subtraction for the portion paid to your ex spouse.

You can enter your payment as a negative number on Form 1040 Line 21 as “Other income,” and as a negative at Line 16a, “Pensions and annuities,” or at Line 31a, “Alimony paid”.

To enter it as a negative in Other Income (which is the easiest for the IRS to understand:

  • In TurboTax Online click on Federal on the left column
  • Click on Wages & Income at the top
  • Scroll down to Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C. Start
  • Choose Other reportable income
  • Say Yes to Any Other Taxable Income?
  • In Other Taxable Income, enter a Description and (negative0 Amount

Did you pay your ex?  Or did the DFAS send it to them?  They probably should be getting their own 1099R for their part.
