Edwin and I are 69 years old and receive social security of which no federal tax is withheld. Do we need to file taxes for the previous year of 2016.

We did purchase a new home in 2016 but didn't close until Jan. of 2017.

As long as your only income is SS benefits then you don't have to file an Income Tax Return at all.
