TurboTax carries your basis information from year to year on it's IRA Information Worksheet.  The information on this worksheet is used, when needed, to prepare Form 8606.

As others have said, you must always retain your last filed Form 8606.  You'll also want to retain TurboTax's IRA Information Worksheet from each year to keep track of your contributions outside of TurboTax.

not everyone is going to be using TurboTax forever and ever.

Which is why I suggested retaining the IRA Information Worksheet so that one has the information needed to complete their future tax returns using whatever method they choose to use after using TurboTax.

The IRS needs you to include with your 2018 return only if the following situations occurred in 2018:

  • Nondeductible contributions made to a traditional IRA
  • Distributions from a traditional, SEP or SIMPLE IRA that had nondeductible contributions (excluding rollovers, conversions, recharacterizations, qualified charitable distributions, one-time distribution to fund an HSA, or return of certain contributions)
  • Conversions from a traditional, SEP, or SIMPLE IRA to a Roth IRA
  • Distributions from a Roth IRA (other than rollovers, recharacterizations, or a return of certain contributions)
TurbpTax will automatically generate and fill out Form 8606 if you reported any of the above in your return.

you need to keep a copy of your last 8606 so you can pick up from there in the future.
