Do I need to report my dependent's SSA-1099, if he has unearned income?

My wife is on Social Security Disability and my 15 yr old son receives income in his SS# on a SSA1099, he also has unearned income of about $3000, and no earned income, can I still report the unearned income on my tax form on a form 8814, and do I need to report SSA1099 payments because of the unearned income, and how would I do this?

If the child is required to file a return then ALL his income from all sources should be reported ... so add the SSA income.

This is how you enter the unearned income for Form 8814 in TurboTax

In TurboTax, please do the following:

  • Federal Taxes
  • Wages & Income
  • Less Common Income
  • Child's Income (Under Age 24), Click Start
  • Any Child's Income?, click Yes
  • Child Required to File? click Yes
  • Then, Reporting Your Child's Income- You may be able to report your child's income on your return, using Form 8814, "Parents' Election to Report Child's Interest and Dividends".
