Do I have to claim a lump sum (401k) alimony payment if it was not required by the court?

My ex-husband and I split amicably and wrote our own terms with the help of a lawyer.  He voluntarily gave me half of his 401k.   Do I have to claim this money I received on my taxes?

No, if it was not specifically named as alimony in the court documents, you do not have to include it as alimony.  You may want to get a statement from him (if you can) just to be safe.
