You enter the full amount as shown on the SSA 1099 form. TurboTax will calculate the taxable amount and enter both the full amount and taxable amount on form 1040.

You will enter the entire amount as shown on the SSA-1099 that you received.

You are correct that a maximum of 85% of Social Security can be taxed.  However, based on your other income, and tax deductions, it may not be taxable at all.  TurboTax will make all of the calculations for you.

You can find the taxable portion on your 1040 tax return.

Box 6a is your total Social Security.

Box 6b is the taxable amount

If 6b is blank it is okay.  It means none of it was taxable.

To find your tax return in the online version of Turbo tax:

  1. On the menu bar on the left that shows.
    1. My Info
    2. Federal
    3. State
    4. Review
    5. File
  2. Select Tax Tools
  3. On the drop-down select Tools
  4. From Pop up menu
  5. View Tax Summary
  6. On the left sidebar
  7. Preview my 1040
  8. This will bring up your current tax return
