TurboTax may show an error if it detects that Box 14a on your 1099-R is greater than Box 1, as this is generally inconsistent. However, if your values are correct and the error persists, the issue could be a software glitch or data entry mismatch not flagged during earlier checks.

You can try these steps:
1. Review the 1099-R entry carefully to ensure Box 14a and Box 1 amounts are accurate and correctly entered.
2. Delete the 1099-R form and re-enter it from scratch.
3. Check for any extra spaces or hidden characters in the amounts entered.
4. Restart TurboTax and attempt transmission again.

For NY??

NY is particularly picky about having a value in box 16 of the software...even if it is empty on your actual 1099-R..

To fix it to satisfy NY, if box 2a has a non-zero value in it (larger than box 14) enter that in box 16....otherwise place the box 1 value in box 16.

thanks for all your advise.

I did figure out that the problem was as stated. There was no value in the state distribution box 16 which was why the software flagged it. Once i added the gross distribution amount to box 16 i was able to transmit the return.

The 1099-R from both last year and this year do not have the amount in box 16, but i don't remember having to manually add it when doing last years return.

Thanks again

Yeah, My NC software used to have a similar issue for 1099-R forms with box 16 blank.

Sometime in the past couple years, they reprogrammed the link to the NC  software, to deal with it automatically using the correct distribution amount for my 1099-R forms.   Not sure it covered all cases, but it fixed mine.

That NY issue is so common, the NY tax crew really needs to implement some similar NY box 16 programing to automatically correct the problem that is driving their residents & retirees crazy.
