To be able to access Turbo Tax Free Software, go to Turbo Tax Online at Turbo Tax.  You will need to indicate when you begin working in your account that you wish to use the free version of Turbo Tax. If you have already begun working in Turbo Tax Online, you will need to go to the tax tool selection on the left pane of your return and clear and start over. I will include a screen shot at the end of this post illustrating what the screen should like like when you make this selection.

Keep in mind, if you have certain types of income such as stocks and bonds or other investment income, you will need to upgrade to a paid version of Turbo Tax to complete your return. Also in order to claim certain deductions such as itemized deductions, you will be prompted to upgrade to a paid version.

If you have anything else in your information that you have not mentioned , and that requires the use of any of the three possible schedules that go with the Form 1040, you will not be able to use the Free Edition and it will require you to upgrade to a paid version.

Try one of the 8 possible free programs that become available on the IRS site in mid-January:

Try this link to get to the TurboTax Free Edition:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/

But be aware the Free Edition is VERY limited.

The information that you can enter in Free Edition is pretty limited now.  Thanks to the new tax laws that began for 2018 returns, there are no more simple Form 1040EZ or 1040A's.  Everything goes on a Form 1040 that has three extra "schedules" with it, and if you need any of those schedules, you are not able to use the Free Edition.  Using the standard deduction instead of itemizing does NOT mean you will not need any of those schedules

The Free Edition cannot be used for self-employment income, investment income, rental income or a student loan interest deduction.
