Can I add my dad as a dependent if he receives social security?

It depends.  You may be able to claim your father as a qualifying relative (even if he doesn’t live with you) as long as he meets the requirements below.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or resident, or a resident of Canada or Mexico for part of the year
  • Made less than $4,700 gross income (except nontaxable Social Security benefits) in 2023
  • Received more than 50% of their support from you
  • Must not be claimed as a dependent by another taxpayer
  • Must not file a joint return
