Box 15- State on turbo tax doesn't list the option of Tennessee in the drop down list.

Imported w2 and it said something was missing. Box 15 was missing state "Tennessee". When trying to manually input TN i realize there isn't an option for TN??

Delete anything from boxes 15-17.  TN doesn't have a state tax.  Leave them blank.

You're saying to delete everything in TurboTax for boxes 15-17, even if the W2 shows data in any of these boxes? I have this same issue and was under the impression that omitting anything from the W2 could cause an audit (maybe an old myth?). I find it odd that every state, territory, and DC is in the dropdown - *except for Tennessee.

I spoke with a rep from TurboTax (who was very friendly and tried to be helpful) but in the end gave me the same advice as you. He also couldn't escalate this issue. Now I'm concerned there may be other items in TurboTax that are incorrect. I've been a long time TurboTax user and don't like the thought of switching to another tax software, but I am definitely not comfortable omitting info that is clearly on my W2.

Are you saying that your W-2 has Tennessee state information in boxes 15 to 17?  Tennessee does not impose an income tax, so no employers would be legally withholding income tax for Tennessee.  If Tennessee is the state in box 15, then box 17 needs to be zero.  If it is zero, then leaving boxes 15 to 17 blank on the W-2 form in TurboTax will not cause any issues for you.

If there is anything other than zero (or blank) in Box 17 on your W-2 from Tennessee, then your employer issued you an incorrect W-2 and you should speak with them about the error and ask for the W-2 to be corrected.

Nine states — Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming — have no state income taxes. If your state has no state income tax, it is not in the drop down menu of Box 15 of form W-2. Just leave boxes 15, 16 & 17 Blank, no spaces.

Anything in box 17? If 17 is blank or 0 leave boxes 15, 16 & 17 Blank, no spaces.

What boxes have data?

I live in TN, but worked locally for two different companies who are headquartered in another state. One put TN in box 15 (left 16 & 17 blank), and the other put TN in box 15 with 'NO W/H' right beside it), put my gross salary in box 16, and left 17 blank. So, to answer your question - box 17 is blank on both W2s.

I appreciate the quick replies! I guess I'll just leave 15-17 blank on the TurboTax return and hope for the best 🙂
