Hi TurboTax Support,
I need assistance with properly reporting a nondeductible IRA contribution I made in early 2026 for the 2025 tax year. Here’s a summary of the steps I took:
1. Traditional IRA Contribution: I opened a Traditional IRA account with Schwab in February 2026 and contributed $7,000 for the 2025 tax year, as well as $7,500 for 2026.
2. Roth IRA Conversion: I also opened a Roth IRA account at Schwab and, a few days later, converted the total $14,500 ($7,000 for 2025 + $7,500 for 2026) from the Traditional IRA to the Roth IRA.
3. Tax Software Issue: While filing my 2025 tax return, TurboTax is not prompting me to designate the $7,000 (for 2025) contribution as a nondeductible IRA contribution. Furthermore, when I preview my tax return, I do not see Form 8606 included, and there is no mention of the nondeductible IRA contribution anywhere in the return.
Could you please help me ensure that:
* The $7,000 I contributed for 2025 is correctly flagged as a nondeductible IRA contribution.
* Form 8606 is generated to report this nondeductible contribution, as well as the Roth IRA conversion.
Thank you for your assistance, and I look forward to your guidance on how to resolve this issue.
Sincerely,
Prashanth Ravinder

You have to enter your 2025 nondeductible Traditional IRA contribution in TurboTax. This will trigger form 8606 which automatically generated by TurboTax.
The 2026 contribution and the backdoor Roth conversion will be reported on your 2026 tax return when you'll receive a form 1099-R for it.
Please follow the instructions in this TurboTax Help article to report your 2025 nondeductible IRA contribution.
Hi,
I followed the instructions in the TurboTax article. The Turbo Tax Online software is not prompting or asking me about the following:
* When you reach the screen with the box for Deductible contributions elected non-deductible, enter an amount.
I'm receiving the following prompts:
1. Enter the total amount of contributions you put into a traditional IRA for 2025, even if you later transferred some or all of it to a Roth IRA.
a. Total 2025 traditional IRA contributions = <enter>. I entered $7000.
b. Amount of these regular contributions for 2025 you contributed between January 1, 2026 and April 15, 2026. = <enter>. I entered $7000.
2. Did you recharacterize any of the traditional IRA contributions for 2025 over to a Roth IRA contribution?
a. Yes or No. I entered No.
3. Did you contribute more money to this IRA than was allowed in 2024 or any previous year?
a. Yes or No. I entered No.
4. Did you have any nondeductible IRA contributions to your traditional IRA from 2024 or prior years?
a. Yes or No. I entered No.
I receive the following message - Your IRA Deduction Summary. Based on what you've entered you don't qualify for an IRA deduction. I do not receive - Deductible contributions elected non-deductible, enter an amount.
Please help!!!
you will not get the question about deductible/non-deductible election if not eligible for a deductible contribution, it's assumed to be entirely non-deductible.
so you're likely in good shape - verify on your Form 8606 (in Forms mode on desktop, or in the PDF for your return if using Online) and you should see the $7000 on Line 1 and Line 14. The basis on Line 14 will carry forward to your 2026 Form 8606 Line 2 when you file the 2026 contribution and conversion for the entire balance.
Hi,
I’m not comfortable proceeding with filing until I can confirm that Form 8606 is included in my return. Currently, I’m unable to view the full PDF without completing payment and going through the final filing steps.
The “View Return” option only provides a summary, and the preview of Form 1040 does not display this level of detail.
Could you please advise how I can review the complete return, including all forms and schedules, before paying the TurboTax fees and submitting the filing?
Thank you.
@prav01135 you can't view it with online until you've paid for the service but you can then review and update your return as needed before filing. (1040 and Schedules 1-3 you can view anytime).
Thank you for your response. However, I’m afraid I’m still not feeling reassured. While I can view Schedules 1-3, I noticed that they do not reference or include Form 8606. I’ve cleared my tax return and entered the information multiple times, but the questions remain unchanged, and there is no clear indication that the 8606 form will be generated. Additionally, it doesn’t prompt me to enter the non-deductible contribution amount.
For comparison, when I used Tax Act, it provided a dedicated field in the guided questionnaire to enter the non-deductible contribution. Once completed, the summary window clearly displayed both the contribution amount and the non-deductible contribution amount on Form 8606. It’s this level of clarity I was hoping to find in the current service.
I’ve been a loyal TurboTax user for many years, but unfortunately, I’m now considering switching services, at least for this tax year, and possibly in the future if this issue persists.
I would greatly appreciate any further assistance or guidance you can provide on this matter. Thank you again for your help.
as a fellow user I can't speak for Intuit or provide assurance the rest of your filing process will be issue-free; but I would say that a non-deductible contribution is a relatively straightforward situation so I doubt correct generation of 8606 will be problematic.
this is the way Intuit price and structure this online service. If you're more comfortable with TaxAct or something else then use that. I prefer Turbotax Desktop where you see all the forms as you go, not as interview-centric or expensive as Online (or as pushy to buy extra services)
Hi,
I followed your recommendation and decided to try the TurboTax Desktop version, accepting that I might lose some money if it didn’t work out, since it was slightly cheaper than the online version.
I noticed only minor differences between the desktop and online versions—they both follow a similar guided questionnaire, and there wasn’t really an option for manual form edits or additional control. Also, I had to prepay before even starting the application.
That said, I was able to generate and review all forms before e-filing. I confirmed that Form 8606 was generated and completed correctly.
So overall, it worked out, even if the experience wasn’t exactly as expected. I appreciate your help and guidance—I was able to move forward without switching providers and successfully submitted my taxes.
@prav01135 I don't know if you found the option in desktop but if you click on Forms mode icon at the top of the window or do View / Go to Forms, you'll see all the forms and do have ability to edit certain things directly (or on underlying worksheets populated by the interview mode), which is a big difference between desktop and online.
Hi TurboTax Support,
I need assistance with properly reporting a nondeductible IRA contribution I made in early 2026 for the 2025 tax year. Here’s a summary of the steps I took:
1. Traditional IRA Contribution: I opened a Traditional IRA account with Wells Fargo Advisors in April 2026 and contributed $8,000 for the 2025 tax year, as well as $8,600 for 2026.
My wife also contributed $7,000 for 2025 and $8600 for 2026
2. Roth IRA Conversion: I also opened a Roth IRA account at Schwab and, a few days later, converted the total $32,200 ($15,000 for 2025 + $17,200 for 2026) from the Traditional IRA to the Roth IRA.
3. Tax Software Issue: While filing my 2025 tax return, TurboTax is not prompting me to designate the $15,000 (for 2025) contribution as a nondeductible IRA contribution. Furthermore, when I preview my tax return, I do not see Form 8606 included, and there is no mention of the nondeductible IRA contribution anywhere in the return.
The option for Non Deductible is not available.
@dnvyas what happened in Turbotax tho - are you following these steps for the contribution?
be sure not to answer any questions about recharacterizing the contribution to Roth just answer purely as a Trad IRA contribution. The Roth conversion will be reported in your 2026 taxes when you get the 1099-R along with the 2026 contributions.
