Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

As financial planner, we hold retirement seminars at local restaurants (50 people at a time) for potential clients. Where do I deduct costs? Advertisement? Misc expense?

We use an agency to find qualified potential clients, confirm appointment and have the meeting at an upscale restaurant. We give a 1 hr seminar on retirement then have dinner and sign potential clients.  We then meet with them and try to earn their business. Each seminar costs approx $3k for the dinner/venue and $2500 for the marketer.

When claiming the business expense on your Schedule C, you could use either category.  It makes sense that it could be advertising or a miscellaneous expense where you can write your own description for the expense.  The end result will be the same whichever category you choose.
